Oscar Wilde wrote “forgive me for my long letter, I did not have time to make it short”. Or something like that (forgive me; I do not have time to look it up). For lawyers, being able to be direct and to the point is something of an art. For some, it is “perfectionism” that deters them . For most, it is being overly conscientious (also known as back covering) and for the rest, it is just bad habits and laziness.

We are told that we cannot disregard the value of social media and those of us busy tweeting and linking have clearly got on board. But some days, it can seem like a full time job. In fact, many businesses now employ someone just to manage their social media activity. I find that I only need to be tied up with other matters for a couple of days, to feel completely out of the loop.

The key to LinkedIn is to enjoy it. If you have it on your to do list and set dull goals for yourself like, I must link in with 5 people today, the whole beauty of LinkedIn is missed. We all know that networking in one form or another is important for making contacts and expanding business.

As a professional skills trainer, I have met a large number of notaries this year and it is interesting to observe how diverse the profession is in terms of commerciality. On the one hand, there are notaries who will embrace new technology, pride themselves on moving with the times, are willing to develop new practices and are keen to be seen as modern, internationally recognised lawyers.

Employers overseas are frequently requesting notarised and apostilled or legalised copies of degree certificates to prove that the certificates are genuine. The time that this takes and the cost involved varies considerably depending which country the certificate is being sent to but the best place to start is with a notary public.

More and more doctors, nurses and dentists are swapping the drizzle, cold and dark afternoons in the UK in favour of sunshine, barbeques and surfing on Bondi Beach. And who can blame them? However, as if to test their determination and commitment, first they have to get through the crystal maze that is the Australian Medical Council pathway application.

Since November 2010 notaries are required to complete 6 hours of Continuing Professional Education (which is the equivalent of CPD) per year. In order to ease us into this new regime, it was decided that the requirement for the first two years (November 2010 – November 2012) could be rolled into one so notaries are compliant if they get their 12 points at any time in the first 2 years. If you practice conveyancing or probate as a notary, you will have an additional CPE requirement.

Call me biased, but in my opinion, notaries are not really that expensive - it’s all a matter of perspective. Admittedly, compared to notaries in the States, UK notaries are extortionately expensive but compared to everywhere else in the world, particularly civil law jurisdictions like Spain, English notaries are debasingly cheap.

Welcome to The Notary Connection - the connection point for notaries, lawyers and anyone dealing with transactions overseas. My name is Katie Beckett and I am a notary public. I am also a commercial property solicitor.

I am a consultant with Winston Solicitors LLP in Leeds and in the course of my work I deal with enquiries from people dealing with all sorts of weird and wonderful situations requiring the services of a notary.
