Harassment includes behaviour that is offensive, frightening or in any way distressing. It may be intentional bullying which is obvious or violent but can also be unintentional, subtle and insidious. This means it can range from unwanted physical contact and lewd comments to nick names, teasing or name calling or other which is not with malicious intent but which is upsetting. It may not be targeted at an individual but consist of general culture which, for instance, appears to tolerate the telling of sexist jokes.

Examples:

  • A female employee is continually told how "sexy" she is and is constantly touched by a male colleague which she finds humiliating and distressing. This is harassment.
  • A female employee is sat in a room full of male colleagues who constantly make sexist jokes. This may be harassment on the grounds of sex, even though it is not the victim herself who is the subject of the teasing.
