How does the Church of England Redress Scheme work?

Asking yourself: "How does the Church of England Scheme Work"?

The Church of England is in the process of establishing a comprehensive National Redress Scheme to provide financial compensation, therapeutic support, and formal apologies to individuals who have suffered abuse within the institution. While the full scheme is not yet operational, an Interim Support Scheme is currently in place to offer immediate assistance to those in urgent need.

The long-awaited National Redress Scheme is a significant step by the Church of England to acknowledge and provide redress for the various forms of abuse that have occurred under its auspices. The scheme is designed to address not only sexual and physical abuse but also emotional, spiritual, psychological, and financial abuse, as well as neglect.

How Does the Church of England Redress Scheme Work for me?

Once operational, the National Redress Scheme will be independently administered to ensure impartiality and fairness in the assessment of claims.

The application process is intended to be survivor-focused and trauma-informed. While the precise details are yet to be finalised, the aim is to create a process that is accessible and does not re-traumatise individuals.

The Church has allocated a significant financial provision for the scheme, demonstrating a commitment to its effective implementation.

The National Redress Scheme (Not Yet Open)

The Church of England is establishing a formal National Redress Scheme to provide a range of support to survivors of abuse. The scheme is designed to cover physical, sexual, emotional, spiritual, psychological, and financial abuse, as well as neglect.

The redress offered will be tailored to the individual and may include:

  • Financial Compensation: A payment to acknowledge the harm suffered and its long-term impact.
  • Therapeutic Support: Access to specialist counselling and therapy to aid your recovery.
  • A Formal Apology: The opportunity to receive a meaningful apology from the Church.
  • Other Practical Support: Measures to help you move forward with your life.

Important Update: The launch of the full National Redress Scheme has been delayed. The earliest date for its final legislative approval is now July 2025. This delay is to allow for a review following the Makin Report, which may broaden the scheme's eligibility criteria.

The Interim Support Scheme (Currently Active)

While the national scheme is being developed, the Interim Support Scheme (ISS) is open and available. This scheme is designed to provide immediate, urgent help to survivors facing crisis as a direct result of the abuse. This can include funding for essential therapeutic support or immediate financial assistance. Winston Solicitors can help you assess your eligibility and make an urgent application to the ISS.
