Councillor blasts Royal Mail over post office closure

A councillor in Chatteris, Cambridgeshire has criticised the Royal Mail for closing its village post office because it was too dangerous for postmen to walk up and down the stairs.

Chris Howe has called the decision to close the two-storey sorting office nonsense and “political correctness gone mad” after the Royal Mail said that it would be sold off and replaced by a new building where sorting will all be done on the first floor.

The Royal Mail says that the decision will improve working conditions and will lead to a more cost effective operation. A spokesman said the move was due to business and operational reasons but Howe said it was absolute nonsense. He added: “The postmen say they don’t even have to climb any stairs as no work is done on the first floor. The reason for the move I have been told is to ‘de-risk multi-floor working’ which is utter rubbish.”
