Government set for parental leave rows - Employment

Prime Minister David Cameron is set for conflict within the government over his promises to extend parental leave and flexible working rights.

A report commissioned by the Prime Minister has recommended that both policies should be scaled back for fear of harming growth in the business sector. Plans have already been outlined by the government to give couples greater freedom to match their maternity and paternity leave to better suit their personal circumstances, while another proposal will simplify the process for new parents to receive flexible working hours.

However the report, by venture capitalist Adrian Beecroft, says the measures could harm growth and Chancellor George Osborne is among those expected to call for the plans to be revised. However, Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg and a number of senior ministers are expected to insist on the family-friendly policies being implemented. News of the split within government comes after a poll shows that support for the Prime Minister among women is falling, with over half of those questioned saying that they have been affected more than men by the spending cuts. Mr Beecroft’s report is due out at the end of the month.
