Segway rider loses appeal

Read time: 1 minute

A South Yorkshire man, who became the first person in the country to be fined for riding a Segway on a pavement, has lost his appeal.

Phillip Coates was fined £75 and ordered to pay £250 costs after riding the two-wheeled vehicle on a pavement near his home in Barnsley. The judge in the initial case ruled that the Segway is a motor vehicle and therefore it was an offence to ride one on a pavement. The conviction was upheld at the High Court in Leeds by Lord Justice Munby and Mr Justice Langstaff.

The case has attracted a good deal of coverage, with interest from Segway users throughout the country who argue that, following the Barnsley case, they are no longer able to ride them on pavements and are also stopped from using them on roads as they fail to meet the requirements of a motor vehicle for use on the highway.
