“Sick” money-saving idea sees pool heated by crematorium

Redditch Borough Council has come up with a new way to save on their electricity bills. A recent proposal sees the council planning to heat the Abbey Stadium Sports Centre by using the excess heat generated by the crematorium, situated next door.

The council claims that such a move would save £14,500 a year but opponents of the scheme slam it as being “sick and eerie”.

Simon Thomas, a funeral director in the town, says: “I think it will cause uproar and may even put people off using the facilities which would lose the council money. It just doesn’t feel right.”

However, council leader Carole Gandy says it will make no difference to the people who use the crematorium for services. A public meeting will be held to discuss the matter before it comes up again at the council’s executive committee.
