Global law firm to Let Staff Exchange Bank Holidays

Between 7 April 2023 and 29 May 2023, most of the UK will be taking advantage of five bank holidays and a much-needed break for employees. Two of these bank holidays are centred around the Christian festival of Easter. What if you don’t wish to acknowledge Good Friday and Easter Monday but would rather work those two days take the paid leave elsewhere in the year? Global law firm, Linklaters, may have the answer.

Linklaters has announced that it will be offering its staff the opportunity to exchange bank holidays for other days off throughout the year. This move is aimed at giving employees more flexibility.

The new policy will allow employees to swap any of the eight bank holidays for alternative days off. This means that staff can take time off on days that are more suitable for their personal circumstances.

Although a bank holiday is a welcomed break for many, particularly those after the festive period in December, people who observe alternative religious days could instead now have those days off without having to take additional annual leave.

It seems that Linklaters has not only recognised that its employees have different needs and priorities outside of work, but this policy gives them more control over their time.

The policy does not mean that employees will be working fewer days or hours overall. Rather, it is a way for them to have more control over when they take time off.

This is a positive example, one which other companies may, or possibly should follow. Monzo Bank clearly agree having announced a similar policy.

Work-life balance is an important issue that has gained increasing attention in recent years, and companies that prioritise the well-being of their staff are likely to attract and retain top talent.
