What does “DV survivor” mean?

A DV survivor is someone who has experienced domestic violence or abuse and found a way to move forward. It recognises your strength, not just your past. This term includes people affected by physical, sexual, psychological, financial, or emotional abuse, as defined by the Domestic Abuse Act 2021.

Can you claim domestic abuse compensation?

Yes. If you’ve suffered physical or sexual violence, or a psychological injury caused by direct threats to your life, you may be eligible to claim through the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority (CICA).

This Government-backed scheme helps survivors receive financial recognition for what they’ve been through.

Unfortunately, the CICA scheme does not currently cover purely psychological, emotional, or financial abuse without physical violence or threats.

How much compensation can survivors receive?

Compensation amounts vary depending on your injuries and experience. For example, survivors of domestic violence causing physical injury may receive up to £8,200, or more if there were serious or multiple assaults, or been diagnosed with a disabling mental injury due to abuse.
