Marie Walsh has appeared on BBC Radio Leeds to discuss the law surrounding the employment of migrant workers.

On the primetime Andrew Edwards show on Monday evening, 12th August, she was invited on to talk about firms using cheap foreign labour and employment law in general. The shadow immigration minister Chris Bryant had criticised the unscrupulous behaviour of Tesco and Next in particular but Marie said that employers were doing nothing wrong in recruiting whoever they choose, indeed they were positively encouraged to employ a diverse workforce.

She said the minimum wage applied to all workers wherever they came from and all had to be paid according to the legislation. On the issue that had dominated the news agenda that day, she said there was no obligation on firms to recruit from within their local area, though they were allowed, in some circumstances, to positively discriminate in favour of minority groups, the disabled for example, who were under-represented within the workforce.

It was an excellent interview by Marie which, without delving into the politics of the story, explained the law very clearly in relation to the employment of migrant workers.
