Remember a Charity in Your Will Week 2025

Our Private Client team was proud to take part in Remember a Charity in Your Will Week 2025. The national campaign, which ran from 8th-14th September, encourages people to think about leaving a gift to charity in their Will. It is an idea that can feel daunting at first but is in fact both simple and rewarding.

Every year, gifts in Wills raise around £3 billion for good causes in the UK. These donations fund everything from life-saving medical research to the animal shelters and community groups that make a real difference in daily life. Yet despite this, only a small percentage of people actually include a charity in their Will. One of the main aims of the campaign is to show that you don’t have to be wealthy to leave a legacy. Even a small gift, once combined with thousands of others across the country, can change lives.

Why we got involved with Remember a Charity in Your Will Week

We spend a lot of time helping families to plan for the future. Wills, Trusts, and Lasting Powers of Attorney are at the heart of what we do, and over the years we’ve seen how much peace of mind people gain from putting their affairs in order. Campaigns like Remember a Charity in Your Will Week give us the chance not only to share our expertise. They also help people see Will writing in a more positive light. It isn’t simply about paperwork and tax planning. It’s about protecting loved ones and supporting causes that mean something to you.

This isn’t the first time we’ve taken part in a national awareness week. We have previously supported Update Your Will Week, which highlights how important it is to review your Will as life changes. Both campaigns share the same goal - to encourage people to think carefully about their future and make decisions now that will make things easier later. We have also taken part in Will Aid, the annual charity Will-writing scheme.

What we did during the campaign

During the week, our team shared advice, raised awareness across our platforms, and spoke with clients about the practicalities of including charities in their Wills. Many people are surprised to learn how flexible this can be. You can choose to leave a specific sum of money, a percentage of your estate, or even personal items. You can also balance your gift so that your family is still fully provided for.

We also explained the tax benefits. Leaving 10% or more of your estate to charity can reduce the rate of Inheritance Tax on the rest of your estate from 40% to 36%. For many clients, this means they can make a generous charitable gift. As a result, their loved ones may actually inherit more. It is one of those rare situations where everyone benefits.

"Remember a Charity in Your Will Week is an excellent opportunity to highlight just how much of a difference even a small legacy gift can make. We were delighted to play our part in raising awareness for a local charity and supporting clients to make decisions that benefit both their loved ones and the causes they care about.” - Monika Volsing

And of course, we had a little fun along the way too. We joined in with the national campaign’s theme of legacy and encouraged people to think about what they would like to be remembered for. The responses ranged from heartfelt wishes to support local charities, through to more light-hearted ideas, like being remembered for baking the best Yorkshire puddings. It was a reminder that while estate planning is serious, it can also reflect the lighter, more personal sides of our lives.

Why Making a Will matters

Taking part in Remember a Charity in Your Will Week gave us the opportunity to have important conversations with our clients and community. Too often, people put off making a Will because it feels overwhelming or unnecessary. Yet without one, families can be left with complicated and sometimes painful disputes at a time when they are already grieving. Adding a gift to charity is another way of ensuring your Will reflects your true wishes.

The campaign also highlighted just how powerful collective giving can be. A single gift might feel small, but when added together, gifts provide charities with essential funding that keeps their services running. Thanks to campaigns like this, we’re seeing more people realise that leaving a legacy doesn’t have to mean huge sums of money. It’s about making a difference in whatever way you can.

Our Commitment to Supporting Local Charities

We are delighted that we were able to support this campaign and to encourage more people to think about their legacies. Playing a part in helping to raise awareness and start conversations that will have a long-lasting impact.

Our Private Client team will continue to support initiatives like this, because we know how important it is to keep Wills at the forefront of people’s minds. Writing or updating your Will is one of the most important things you can do for your loved ones, and if you can use it to make a positive contribution to the world as well, so much the better.

If Remember a Charity in Your Will Week has inspired you to think about your own plans, we’d be happy to help. Whether you want to update your existing Will, write your first one, or simply find out more about including a gift to charity, our team is here to guide you through it.

I was dreading the probate process after my husband sadly died earlier this year. Friends who had been in the same situation warned me it could take months or even years. I didn't even know what it involved, it was a complete mystery to me!Thank good ness for Emily Spencer at Winston solicitors who talked me through the whole process and told me what information I needed to complete the paperwork. Emails and phone queries were answered very promptly and once I'd submitted all the figures the grant of probate was applied for by Emily and was returned within a few weeks, not months! Great result and nothing like the trauma I was anticipating.
