Radical measures considered to cut road deaths

The government is said to be considering a number of proposals including a ban on young drivers carrying any passengers who are not members of their family, as part of efforts to reduce the number of fatalities on the roads which involve teenagers.

The Association of British Insurers (ABI) has been invited by the government to look into cutting the number of accidents caused by young drivers and is thought to be considering measures including putting a stop to new drivers carrying any passengers at all and putting young drivers onto a curfew, banning them from roads at night.

The ABI says that though drivers under the age of 25 comprise about one in eight of all drivers, they are responsible for about a third of the number of fatalities on the country’s roads. It also says that an 18-year-old driver is three times more likely to be involved in an accident than someone who is 30 years older.

The Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin says the government is open to suggestions which come from the ABI, while the Institute of Advanced Motorists goes further and wants the government to revise the driving test to specifically include rural roads where the majority of the fatalities and serious injuries occur.
